More Patients, More Denials, and a Workforce That Can’t Keep Up

Hospitals and large practices are seeing more patients come through their doors than they have in years. And more of the claims tied to those patients are getting denied, thanks to payers using AI to deny at unprecedented volume.

With both trends spiking simultaneously, administrative teams have their hands full from the time a patient shows up until well after they’ve been discharged.

The problem is that these same administrative teams are already stretched thin by a lack of qualified employees industry-wide. With workloads growing and the admin workforce decreasing, hospitals and large practices are feeling the pressure in multiple areas, including financial clearance and authorizations, patient access, and revenue cycle recovery.

The responses of years gone by, which were to hire more people and contract more short-term fill-ins, aren’t sustainable over the long term. That’s what makes this moment much more of a turning point than there’s been in years past. The industry needs a new path.

We’ve been working on this shift for a while now, and we’ve put a framework for navigating it into our new white paper: A Workforce Model That No Longer Works. It lays out why workforce infrastructure is the model built to give hospitals the capacity they need without the headcount they can no longer find.
